Autism was at center stage in Hollywood as the Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards were given out on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Autism: The Musical, which aired on HBO, won Emmy's in both Outstanding Nonfiction Special as well as Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming. This marks an exceptional achievement for this special film. The awards ceremony will air on the E! Network on September 20 at 8:00pm ET.
Burbacher/Charleston Mercury Study: National Austism Association. Burbacher's earlier research found that exposure to Thimerosal, the ethylmercury-based vaccine preservative, resulted in inorganic mercury deposits in the brain that were twice the amount of those following exposure to equal amounts of methyl mercury, the type commonly found in fish. Previous research has documented that inorganic mercury is associated with a neuro-inflammatory process, recently documented to also occur in the brains of children diagnosed with autism. Inorganic mercury has no discernable half-life and, once trapped in the brain, continues to damage brain cells.

Health: Better Diagnosing Autism: CBS 3 (Philadelphia), September 16, 2008. Autism is a condition that affects one in every 150 children in the United States. Finding better ways to diagnose the disorder is the aim of a new research project here in Philadelphia. Four and half year old James Gater has Autism. His twin sister does not. "We're interested in how the brains of children who are at risk for autism develop," said Dr. Sarah Paterson, the study's lead researcher at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Center for Autism Research. She says changes in the brain can show early signs of the disorder.

School Issues Reversal On Special Needs Case, District Gives Up On Integrating Student: Concord Monitor, September 17, 2008. Will Florida Change How Schools Treat Autistic Children?: TCPalm, Colleen Wixon, September 17, 2008. The meeting came about partly as a result of Alex Barton, who gained national attention when his Port St. Lucie kindergarten teacher led a vote to oust him from his classroom. After Alex's case, the Office of the Attorney General launched a statewide investigation into how autistc children are treated in school. A representative from the office attended the session, taking several notes while parents shared their stories.
