Web Sites

  • ARC Greater Twin Cities - Arc is a unique collection of resources. Advocacy, Support groups, legal and political news and initiatives, media, equipment and a host of many other topics. One thing they really concentrate on in the support area is sib-shops. This part of a special needs family is a critically under-served community.
  • Autism Resources - This site has some great information on Dr. Leo Kanner, the "father of autism", as well as the results of his early research.

  • Autism Society of America - This site will provide any or all things national. Books, lectures, bio-medical or anicdotal. Check out the board of directors. They also have a yearly conference that is not a waste of your time.
  • Autism Society of Minnesota - A website organized of families, educators, care givers, and professionals committed to supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorders, on the state level.  A great tool.
  • Autism Speaks -   
    A site "dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder."  This site has a lot of good information about what Autism is as well as some research. 
  • Autism World - This site is out of Australia and has some really great information about autism.  Click on the research tab.
  •   Brain SPECT imaging - This site has some really great brain images of a variety of disorders, including autism.  A nice feature is that it typically shows you a normal brain next to the brain you want to look at, such as an autistic brain or a brain with brain damage.
    • Dr. Tony Attwood  An excellent researcher as well as an important support to those on the Autism Spectrum. He is empathetic and funny. If you get a chance to see a lecture or workshop with him, Go!
  • Eagles Nest - A part of the New Brighton Family Service Center, they offer (through the Minnesota Autism Society website) organized activities designed for children ages 8 - 15 with Asperger’s Syndrome/High Functioning Autism.  Learn more information about what else Eagle's Nest offers  Under the Parks and Recreation page, click on Eagle's Nest. 
  • Minnesota Social Service Association - An association that offers opportunities to be active with the legislature as well as offering CE hours for training.  They also have a yearly and smaller regional conferences for anyone involved in social services to come together, including parents, caregivers, and foster parents.
  • Nature's Edge Therapy Center - Located approximately 2 hours outside the Twin Cities metro area, in Rice Lake, WI, The Nature's Edge Therapy Center, Inc. provides Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy to individuals in a natural environment, incorporating Hippotherapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy, and Horticulture Therapy with conventional treatment methods to attain therapeutic goals. 
  • Pacer Center - This is a local site to Minnesotans. A giant cache of resources. You can join the library for a small fee and it contains hundreds of useful items you can read, check out or download. They are also an advocate source and they provide training and seminars; many times free of charge. If you cannot find something, odds are, they can.
  • Pfeiffer Treatment Center - Pfeiffer Treatment Center (PTC) is a not-for-profit, medical outpatient facility specializing in the treatment of symptoms from biochemical imbalances.  PTC's dedicated medical team treats children, teens, and adults with symptoms of behavioral and learning disorders (including ADD/ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, depression (including postpartum depression), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, post traumatic stress syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease.   A unique, integrative  approach to identify and treat the core metablic imbalances that can create the symptoms common in many behaviaral and learning disorders. They have opened a clinic here in Oakdale, Minnesota.  The main headquarters is in Warrenville, Illinoise. They also have sattelite clinics throughout the United States.
  • Science Daily - A source for the latest research news on a variety of topics, including Autism. 
  • The Gray Center - Carol Gray, Author of the Social Story has an excellent site.  She has been known to hang around with the likes of Tony Atwood, Michelle Garcia Winner and Brenda Smith Myles. Don't skip this one!
  • University of California: Irvine - In the search window, type in "autism" and then choose "full search".  A lot of really great, current articles can be found here.
