Therapy: chair with notebook

We offer therapy and counseling for children (and their families) who have experience with any or all of the following:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Mood Disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Acute Stress Disorder or PTSD
  • History of trauma or abuse

"Life has many different challenges for kids and adults alike. Sometimes those challenges are complicated by the occurrence of more than one problem. Unfortunately, autistic/mood disordered children tend to be targets for abuse; either by abusive adults, school bullies, or just impatient people. They may also experience things along the road of life, such as a house fire, the loss of a loved one, or be a witness to something traumatic like a shooting.  Abuse and Trauma have a different affect on children who also have a mood disorder or a diagnosis on the autism spectrum.  You need a therapist who understands this and has experience treating this or they will not get better."
- Leanne Mairs, MSW, LICSW, CrossRoads Therapist

Which type of therapy and in what amounts is determined by the specific needs of the client and the situation.

  • One-to-one Therapy can be done in an office setting or in home, depending on the needs of the child and family.  Specialized therapy for children are Child Play Therapy and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  • Family Therapy
  • Support Group for parents
  • RDI ® Therapy takes place in a variety of settings, depending on the needs of the family and the specific objective they are working on.  These can include the office, the family home, in a group, in the child's school, or out in the community.

Skills Training:

Many parents have an urgent feeling to get their children into a group with other peers to learn social skills.  Although it sounds good on the surface, social skills groups are not effective and have even been harmful.  The problem is that you can't expect to learn social skills from other children who don't have social skills.  We understand this and provide two alternatives:

  • Social Skills therapy for parents with their children.  Parents and children attend group together and work on practicing specific, therapist directed social skills.
  • Individual Skills training.  A trained skills worker will work with your child to help them learn the skills they need to survive in a variety of settings, including groups.  The difference between CrossRoads and all the others is that we teach the process and don't just provide the solution.  By just providing the solution, without teaching the process, the child does not know how to arrive at solutions on his or her own.

Paying for services:

We are MA Providers.  We can also provide you with a statement to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.  We are working on becoming "in network" providers for several insurance companies, including BCBS and Medica.  We are willing to work with you and your insurance provider.

Some services are not billable to insurance, such as social skills training and individualized assistance with an IEP.  Social Skills Training is $50 per hour.  Charges for other services not covered by insurance, depend on the type of service provided.  chair with notebook
